navigation steps to transfer Asset cost to GL

Hi All,
I need the navigation steps on how to do transfer of cost of asset from fixed asset module to General Ledger module.
Also do we open periods in Fixed asset, if yes, what are the navigation steps to open periods and close periods in fixed asset.
