Effective Date

Can someone please highlight implementation steps in HR, Patroll and OSB where we need to take care of setting the effective date properly for the setup to work in conjunction to each other.
When practicing an implementation, I messed up with the effective dates in some of the implementation steps and so am unable to get the standard benefits for an employee.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
P.S. Very helpful and informative place to learn about ORACLE HRMS.
