Performance

I am new to Apps Installation and have a problem in it. I have installed R12 in my laptop which has duo core and 2GB ram. The Problem I am facing is, the system is slow and does crash at times. What can I do to avoid this? Is there anything possible that I can do apart from adding another 1GB ram(The max i can is 2 GB) .
