Diff between material reservations and allocations

Can anybody explain what is the difference between Material Reservations and Allocaitons.

Hi,
Material Allocation Determines where material comes from (subinventory, locator,
lot (optionally serial and LPN), selects staging subinventory
locator. The output of this is a transaction suggestion only without reservation. You can issue material that is allocated for different .
Material Reservation will reserve the material so that you can't issue it unless you unreserve it.
